You’ve methodically selected the perfect holiday party outfit, and had your suitcase packed for days. Before you leave for the long break don’t forget to think about your travel snacks as well. Wholesome prepacked snacks will leave you satisfied and well fueled for your trip. Here’s a quick list from Health Initiatives dietitians, Amber Johnson and Leah Galante to help you satisfy both your sweet and savory tooth in a healthy easy to travel with way.
Popcorn is easy to carry and just as easy to munch on when you are driving long distances or flying over the holiday season. “Air-popped, plain popcorn is a great whole grain, high fiber option you can easily pick up and take anywhere,” said Johnson. You can also customize your popcorn with anything in your spice rack to create a unique treat. Add cinnamon for a sweeter flavor or curry powder to add a punch to your popcorn, or check out our Poppin’ trail mix recipe.
This tropical delight is sure to leave you with a sunny disposition. “The natural sugar in dried fruit will help keep your energy up during long travel days,” said Galante. Dried mango is rich in vitamin A, which keeps skin healthy and boosts your immune system. They are also a good source of B-complex vitamins, which maximize energy and relieve stress.
Almonds are great on their own, paired with fruit, or on top of Greek yogurt from the airport convenience store. “Almonds are a fantastic source of antioxidants, healthy fats, protein, and fiber,” said Galante. The high protein and fiber levels can promote feelings of fullness and help you stay satisfied along the way.
Seasonal Fruit and Veggies:
Get in the holiday spirit with seasonal fruits and vegetables like carrots, pears, or clementines. Whole fruits are a great source of fiber and water. “Vitamin C rich fruits like pomegranates and citrus, and vegetables, like carrots, can supplement your fluid intake and support immunity,” said Johnson.
Choosing healthier snack options can sometimes be limited while traveling. Enjoying a fun seasonal food may be what is most satisfying to you. Whether you are flying or driving this holiday season, snacks will help keep you energized all day long!
